THE ULTIMATE GRUNGE UPGRADE

During my time working with designer Asa Kazingmei, known for his functional and utility-inspired menswear, I had the opportunity to collaborate on a project involving a green leather jacket that had been overlooked for years. Our designs were heavily influenced by a rugged, grunge, biker aesthetic, and our materials of choice included leather and denim

We began with a classic leather jacket—crafted from the finest, deep green leather. Its construction was impeccable, a true staple of any wardrobe, but it sat on the racks for far too long without turning heads. We couldn’t quite pinpoint why, but something was missing. The leather jacket alone was already a bold, timeless piece, yet it lacked the “oomph” that would make it irresistible to our clientele. It was too simple for our brand, which had become known for its grunge aesthetic, and we realized it needed a bold transformation that would elevate it into the realm of rebellious rock fashion.

After a brainstorming session with the team, we decided to move towards a rock theme—introducing vibrant, contrasting colors and graphics that would give the jacket a louder, more distinct personality. We took the plunge and started with one of the most iconic symbols of the rock world: the skull. We went big with it—a large skull graphic that sprawled across the flap pocket, creating an instant focal point and a striking visual element that screamed rock n’ roll.

But we didn’t stop there. To balance the bold skull design, we opted for a geometric motif on the other side of the jacket. This motif was more understated, fading seamlessly into the fabric, creating an intricate yet subtle contrast that gave the jacket a sense of visual balance. This addition provided a tactile texture, while maintaining the edgy, rebellious spirit of the overall design. It wasn’t just about one bold design—it was about creating a cohesive look where every element worked in harmony.

The next step was adding logos and typography, further reinforcing the rock-inspired vibe we were aiming for. These touches helped to give the jacket a punk rock attitude, adding character and a touch of that grunge feel. The logos were placed thoughtfully, complementing the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the piece. The typography had that weathered, rugged look—like something you’d see spray-painted across the side of an old, gritty tour bus.

The sleeves became another area where we let our creativity run wild. I found inspiration in the texture of an iguana’s skin, which we incorporated by shading various green tones on the sleeve. We wanted the sleeves to feel like they had their own narrative, something both tactile and visually striking. The iguana motif found its place on the bicep, offering an exotic, fierce touch to the jacket.

On the cuffs, we added a compass design, blending vintage elements with a modern rock twist. The faded effect of the compass gave it a worn, lived-in feel—perfect for someone who’s spent years on the road chasing adventure. To complement the compass, we placed a stopwatch design on the opposite sleeve, further playing into the motif of time and travel, a theme often associated with rock culture.

In terms of color, we utilized a teal and orange palette—a bold and daring contrast that gave the jacket that extra pop of color. Despite the bold colors, the white line art became the focal point of the entire design, ensuring that each element stood out yet remained cohesive. The pop of teal and orange provided just the right amount of shock value without overwhelming the core design.

The lapel, which initially felt too bare compared to the detailed front and sleeves, needed something to match the rest of the jacket's rugged energy. Drawing from the wild spirit of rock, we decided to texture it with a snakeskin pattern, giving the lapel a rugged feel that blended elegance with edge. We gave it a faded, vintage effect, ensuring it looked worn-in, like something you'd pull out of the back of a tour bus after a cross-country rock tour.

This jacket has evolved from being a basic leather piece to a full-on rock masterpiece, encapsulating the rebellious energy of rock music and the bold aesthetic of streetwear. The transformation wasn’t just about adding new elements; it was about creating a piece that tells a story—one of grit, rebellion, and unapologetic attitude. It’s the jacket that demands attention, a true symbol of the bold transformation we envisioned.
